Where Does Cord Blood Come From?

Pregnant women are 'connected' to their babies through the umbilical cord. Wikipedia defines the umbilical cord as "... the connecting cord from the developing embryo or fetus to the placenta."  Or simply put, babies in their mommies' tummies are 'fed' with nutrients via the umbilical cord connected to their mommies.
Cord blood comes from the umbilical cord

Now, modern medical science is telling us that upon birth, this cord that sustained our need for nutrients inside, could be the very same cord that could save, heal, and prolong our lives.  The umbilical cord has cord blood, which is now extracted at birth and preserved in cord blood bank facilities.
